How to Do a Complete Vehicle Fuel Efficiency Audit

A vehicle fuel efficiency audit is a systematic check of every factor that affects your fuel consumption. By methodically evaluating your vehicle condition, driving habits, and route choices, you can identify specific areas for improvement and quantify how much each change saves you.

Step 1: Establish Your Baseline

Before making changes, measure your current fuel economy accurately. Fill your tank completely, reset the trip odometer, and drive your normal routes for at least three full tanks. Use GPS data to estimate average speed on different routes. Routes where you maintain 35-55 mph steadily are typically more efficient than routes with frequent stops.

Step 5: Assess Accessories and Load

Remove any unnecessary weight from the vehicle. Take note of roof racks, cargo carriers, or other external accessories. Remove any aftermarket parts that might increase drag. Check whether you need everything you carry daily or if some items can be stored at home.

Step 6: Implement and Measure

Make changes one at a time so you can measure the impact of each. Start with the easiest and cheapest fixes first: tire pressure, trunk cleanout, and driving habits. Track your MPG for at least three tanks after each change. Document everything so you can see which improvements gave you the biggest return.

Step 7: Calculate Your Savings

Compare your new MPG to your baseline. Multiply the MPG improvement by your annual miles and divide by your new MPG to find gallons saved. Multiply by your local fuel price for dollar savings. Most drivers who complete a full audit find 10-25% improvement in their fuel economy.
